ICC chief prosecutor gets accused just before court request of arresting Netanyahu

(MENAFN) The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, faced sexual assault accusations just before he moved to request arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, prompting questions about the timing of these claims, a commentator told reports.

Prior to formally applying for the warrants, Khan is said to have notified officials in London about his intentions. However, then-Foreign Secretary David Cameron reportedly threatened that the UK might withdraw from the ICC entirely if Khan went ahead with the plan.

In April 2024, about a month before Khan officially sought the arrest warrants, an ICC staff member accused him of repeated sexual assault. The complaint was brought to the attention of Thomas Lynch, an American attorney and senior ICC adviser, who alerted internal oversight bodies within the court.

The United States, which has never formally accepted the ICC’s authority, opposed the arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant from the outset and repeatedly threatened sanctions against Khan. Eventually, Washington imposed restrictions on the court, some judges, and Khan himself.

Internal investigations into the allegations against Khan were closed after the complainant chose not to cooperate. Notably, details about the sexual assault complaint were leaked to the media in October 2024, just days before the ICC officially issued the arrest warrants in November.

The ICC’s oversight group, known as the Assembly of States Parties, publicly identified Khan as a suspect and handed the case over to the United Nations’ Office of Internal Oversight Services for investigation. Former ICC judges described this move as “completely outside of protocol that they’re aware of,” and “plain strange,” according to the columnist.
