RETIRED BOCA ATTORNEY PLEADS GUILTY IN CHILD SEX ABUSE MATERIAL CASE

A retired Boca Raton attorney pleaded guilty on Thursday to attempting to obtain sexually explicit images of a child.

Darryl Kogan, 68, a founding partner of the personal injury law firm Kogan & DiSalvo, pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted receipt of visual depictions involving the sexual exploitation of a minor, according to the Department of Justice.

A Department of Justice news release said Kogan believed he was interacting with a 16-year-old girl through an online messaging application. According to court records, the person Kogan believed to be the teenage girl began communicating with him, and during their conversation, Kogan discussed engaging in sexual activity and exchanging sexually explicit images.

Also during the conversation, when the purported teenage girl expressed difficulty using the application to send images, Kogan provided instructions on how to take and transmit the photographs, court records say.

Law enforcement later identified other accounts associated with Kogan that he used for similar conversations.

“This was not an accidental or ambiguous online exchange. … [Kogan’s] guilty plea is another reminder that professional status offers no shield from accountability, and that the internet does not provide anonymity or protection to those who seek to exploit children. Those who attempt to sexually exploit minors online will be identified, prosecuted, and held accountable,” said U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida.

Kogan faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.
